Games more like reality, reality more like games
The London Games Festival is excelling itself. My elder son and I went to Sense of Play 07 today, a full day's conference which covered some very interesting topics.

Guy Debord's 'Game of War'
Guy Debord wrote his own 'game of war' - a version of Kriegspiel (he claimed) played on a sort of chessboard. This was re-created yesteday as part of the London Games Festival fringe,
Struggling with code and making assumptions.
I read Cliffski's Mumblings regularly because Cliff is a good example of a solitary developer struggling against the giants like EA and Ubisoft, and successfully carving a niche for himself, by making games that people enjoy even if they don't have 2 million lines of code. However, I couldn't resist quoting his latest posting as an example of Axel Stockburger's comments on the assumptions made in simulations.

Zerogamer: what are games and simulations really about?
Furtherfield are holding an exhibition, Zero Gamer, as part of the London Games Festival this week. I haven't been yet, but the catalogue notes make a very succinct statement about the nature of simulation.

According to the BBC, Hitachi claim they could release a hard disk with 4TB of storage and a laptop with a 1TB drive, by 2011.

Simulation of crowd movements during the Haj
Having just come back from a short visit to Saudi Arabia, I was intrigued by a simulation of crowd movements in Mecca during the Haj, conducted with software from the Swiss company Savannah Simulations.
