As a director of Stirling Reid Limited a crisis management consultancy based near London but operating world-wide, I simulate for a living.
We organise training exercises and simulations for industrial and commercial clients, in which we pretend that their oil rigs have exploded, their directors been kidnapped, and their chemicals leaked into the environment.
I want to understand a little more about simulation itself. The range of disciplines involved in simulation is wide. Many journals and faculties describe themselves as 'multi-disciplinary', but I am 'non-disciplinary' - I don't claim expertise in any of these specialities. This blog is an attempt to find out what the 'disciplines' mean, and what they contribute, as seen from the perspective of an 'ordinary man'.
I'm a graduate of Cambridge University - but not in any relevant "discipline". I'm a former British diplomat, and published author, and live outside London.
